Suspicious Mail
Be alert to mail pieces which are unexpected, or sent by someone unfamiliar to you. The following characteristics may also dictate caution when handling an unknown mail piece:
- Items addressed to someone no longer with your organization or otherwise outdated
- Items that are handwritten and have not return address, or have one that can’t be verified as legitimate.
- Items containing restrictive endorsements, such as Personal or Confidential.
- Items of unusual weight relative to their size, or that are lopsided or oddly shaped.
- Items sealed with excessive amounts of tape.
- An item containing a postmark which does not match the return address, or bears excessive amount of postage.
If you receive a suspicious piece of mail piece, do not handle it, shake it, or sniff it. Follow these steps:
Isolate the mail piece
Evacuate the immediate area
Wash you hands thoroughly with soap and water
Notify local law enforcement immediately
